installing custom build on a populated XP

Postby orzetto70 » Tue May 29, 2018 1:51 am

Hi there! :D

first of all I want to thank you for this great piece of software
that is helping a lot of XP users left out in the cold
by Google, Microsoft and (soon) Mozilla...
I really hope you will keep on developing the custom build
to support old netbooks and similar hardware! (please do! 8-) )

I need to install the Custom Build on a populated XP computer
that already has a few other (old) browsers installed...

In particular there is Firefox (latest 52.8.0, slooooow! barely usable),
Chrome (official Google one) version 49.0.2623.112 m (last one compatible with XP),
Pale Moon 25.8.1 (old one, one of the last ones optimized for Intel Atom cpus)
and, of course, Internet Explorer...

if I install Advanced Chrome (custom build)
will it overwrite/clash with any of these browsers? (with their settings/bookmarks?)
or will it work nicely alongside? (even alongside official Chrome?)

thank you! :-D

Hello, welcome to the forum, you can run advanced chrome and you won't have problems with user profile since is different than the others.

However every day you will experience more problems with websites, even chrome version 64 have problems right now with many websites because they develop for current stable chrome version, mostly all issues will be with javascript because they keep adding new functions and removing old ones.

At some point XP will be unusable and you will have to change to ubuntu or fedora or any other distro, there is no reason to use XP right now if you can change to a better OS for free.

Hello! It is possible to wait for emergence of new versions of the browser for XP?

Thanks.

I don't understand you but I did not found a way to support windows XP on newer chrome versions, this is because XP kernel is too old.

Please, don't stop supporting XP. It would be a shame. Many people still use it.

@FranceBB:

Did you use the Maxthon Browser already?

In my experience, Maxthon is currently the most advanced and best-working browser for Windows XP. It is based on the core of Chromium 61. There is hope that Maxthon will continue to support XP with newer versions.

I put Sputnik + Google Chrome 47 (they are somehow interconnected) + a set of fonts of Windows 7-10 and all works in Google Chrome 47.

1) We copy a set of the Windows 7-10 fonts in the Fonts Windows XP folder that Google Chrome understood new badges and I showed them instead of small squares;
2) We install browser Sputnik version 2.2.1682.1;
3) We install Google Chrome 47. To remove a yellow strip Google Chrome with the message about the termination of support of XP and Vista it is necessary in properties of a label in the line Object to remove a former inscription and instead of her to insert:"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-infobars
4) We use the Internet via Google Chrome 47.

It is possible to download this set here: http://wdfiles.ru/i30O

Theoretically, we still can ask the developer Sputnik to prolong support of Windows XP: http://corp.sputnik.ru/browser/feedback

Thanks for this information about a new browser project.

I will test this browser in the next few days for compatibility, speed and security and share my experiences here.
