Updated software XP compatible

Post by c-sanchez » Sun Aug 13, 2017 10:47 pm

Well I will list here Web Browsers and general software that are still working on Windows XP and are considerably updated / usable.

Advanced Chrome, need presentation? the great fork from our dear admin, a mixture between some chrome's but with recent versions compatibility.
Advanced Chrome: browser.taokaizen.com/

Firefox, well is and is not Firefox exactly, that is Iceweasel with libportable, this build improve some things on the web browser and is compiled with Windows XP compatibility.
Unfortunately the last XP compatible build is 51. But this is good enough to play with the web.
Firefox 51: sourceforge.net/projects/libportable/files/Iceweasel/Stable/51.x/

K-Meleon, lightweight web browser for Windows, based in Gecko.
The last version updated available is an RC from 2016, Although there are several fixes from comunity to make this more usable.

Otter Browser, aims to recreate the best aspects of the classic Opera (12.x) UI using Qt5.
Otter Browser: otter-browser.org/

360 Total Security antimalware solution still supports XP and is actually relatively good. Given it is made in China it is unsurprising it should be supporting XP as a lot of people still use XP there.

Maxthon also managed to backport Chrome 55 to XP.

Hello Dibya,

First apology to the admin if I ask something here, which does not fit into this forum. I wanted to ask my question actually in the forum of MSFN, but my registration there did not work. But I downloaded the Basilisk Nightly Browser (based on Firefox 55) in the MSFN forum. It works wonderfully under Windows XP. Just like my Yandex browser (based on Chromium 57). I have now 2 reasonably current browsers that work wonderfully under Windows XP.

Now my specific question to you, Dibya: Meanwhile Firefox 57 has appeared, with new engine (Quantum) and new surface (Photon). Do you think that Firefox 57 for Windows XP can be rebuilt? How do you see the future on browsers for Windows XP?

It is possible to compile ff57 for XP . If someone builds it with few adjustments.
I wished to do it but unable as my build beast with vs2015 is Dead.

Thanks @Dibya , topic updated.
I have the same doubt about Firefox 57+, It would be nice view FF "Quantum" running in XP.
But how much is that really possible?

Here a quote from adonais, author of libportable , firefox/iceweasel 51 for xp

adonais:
> Iceweasel 53.1.0 will be the last version for Windows XP.
> It's very, very hard to support for the Windows XP in future releases.
> I have changed more than 3000 sources files and re-compile, But it crashed on the Windows XP.
> I need a lot of time to do the stability testing, I need a faster PC.
> But when I had it, i think Windows XP is completely dead.

But as Rasie1 said was really interesting view Basilisk (based on Firefox 55) working in XP
Although this is not based in "Quantum" engine, is Goanna, but is weird this have (partial) webextensions support.

I'm really confused about As they are designing the guys of Palemoon their "fork" of Firefox :S
