Material Design porting to Advanced Chrome 54?

Post by FranceBB » Tue Feb 19, 2019 5:17 pm

Hi,
do you think you could port the new Material Design to Advanced Chrome 54?
It would be cool to allow users to choose between the classic theme and the Material Design one.

Sadly I can not even build or compile version 54 anymore, getting tons of errors, can only build v60 and up but that won't work under XP.

Google devs changed compiler settings and they seem to only look forward so they don't care about breaking older builds.

Is there a way to get around this? Maybe use older compiler settings? The code of version 54 is the same, I can't get the idea of the problem :(

They changed source code because they changed compiler, they had many "hacks" to make it work and then they removed them to support ninja, then they added new hacks to be able to run ninja.

Will be better to build latest version 72 and make it compatible with XP, many have tried...

It seems to me it is nearly impossible - as you say the underlying NT 5.1 support was completely removed to version 54-56 or so.

It would be nice to have more "modern" Chromium on XP (by the way, Yandex Browser managed to backport version 57 to XP, as I have heard!). But I personally don't like newer versions: gray default theme, Backspace not working unless you install an extension, longer startup times...

And now they changed the tabs shape (I know the design must be changed sometimes, but I would be glad it was configurable) in version 70 and also made new components for audio and video player. And guess what? The new components were buggy even on versions 71-72 (not only custom styling with vendor properties that had worked before did break, but even some basic functionality like playback position change on standard remote MP3 file did not work!).

In fact my dream is to have Firefox Quantum backported to XP (it is really fast and smooth!) :)

Have you tried v74.0.3840.0? I didn't like the google tab shape of v70+ and improved it, you might like it.

Checked this out. Sorry, I don't like it. It's some strange hybrid. Basic Chrome on Windows 7 with new shape is better for me (just needs some good color theme from the Chrome store).
