Better download interface

Post by c-sanchez »

I like as Advanced Chrome improve the download system from Chromium, however I think the Download interface of Chrome/Chromium and Advanced Chrome is not the best.
This has several points against it if we compare it with other interfaces.

To explain my point here a compare with some popular Chromium based browsers wich have changed the download interface

This is the download interface of Opera, a popup button showing downloads in list

This is Vivaldi downloads interface, uses a lateral bar which allow view all downloads, find, edit list, view details as speed and link.

This is Advanced Chrome with Elite Download Manager

This is basically what I would like view, unfortunately this is an extension, I've tried many and none of them have good integration.

This is Cent Browser Download manager interface

This is my favorite download interface, is very clear and accessible

Check the behavior

Using extensions is the best solution because you can update them without updating the entire browser, also you can check the extension source code and improve it, most of them are fully customizable.

Advanced Chrome plus Elite Download Manager is the best mix, It is not included by default because there are many download managers available and they are very easy to install, I don't think is a good idea including one.

Chrome includes a download manager located at chrome://downloads/ that is written on javascript just like a regular extension.

Most browsers that fork chrome/chromium never touch the internal download manager, they are just including a built in extension, Advanced Chrome is the only one that actually changes the stock download shelf and provides OPEN, SAVE and DISCARD options,

Other browsers must include a download manager because thats the only way people can check download speed, even in some browsers downloads are not even shown on the screen, I don't think that is a user friendly design.

I believe browsers are getting very bloated, what I liked about chrome from the beggining was the philosophy of keeping it simple, fousing on the basics and performance, sadly they stopped focusing on the performance part.

Umm well yeah is true include a download manager by default is not good idea, I think then is more a problem of almost chrome extensions, I found one that seems very good

However it's necessary keep enabled the Chrome download bar (what I want to disable) to start downloads with the "save file" button.
So I guess this have two solutions
A option to to "start all downloads" by default from browser or as one option from extension, I wonder if that last is possible.
In any case I will contact with that extensions developers :)

Advanced Chrome hooks the code before download starts so it will always ask to save, open or discard, once you click save or open it will show on chrome download manager or any download manager extension.

In my case, 80% of my downloads are temporary, that means I don't want to keep the files and almost always use OPEN feature, I don't mind clicking on the OPEN button if that keeps my download folder clean, so I believe this is an important feature for most people.

At this time there is no way to disable Advanced Chrome shelf manager but will try to add a flag for next version.
